Case in point: In one recent study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that drinking two or more cups of black tea a day was associated with longevity-boosting benefits. The study examined nearly 500,000 individuals aged 40 to 69 years in The UK Biobank—a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing in-depth genetic and health information from half a million UK participants. These individuals completed a baseline touchscreen questionnaire from 2006 to 2010.
In the study, participants self-reported tea intake and mortality from all causes and leading causes of death, including cancer, all cardiovascular disease (CVD), ischemic heart disease, stroke, and respiratory disease. The conclusion? Higher tea intake was modestly associated with lower all-cause mortality risk among those who drank two or more cups per day. And coffee drinkers, findings were similar regardless of whether participants also had a cup of joe or not.
So, if you’re not totally keen on the idea of drinking black tea, well, black—and you still want to reap its bounty of longevity-boosting benefits—we have some good news for you. The study’s findings also suggested that a splash of your favorite milk, alt-milk, or sweetener of choice wouldn’t significantly reduce the health benefits of consuming black tea (although, like all things in life, consuming added sugar in moderation is key).
