14-Year-Old Boy Tried As Adult For Shooting Stepmother

A teenage boy who confessed to shooting his allegedly sexually abusive stepmother will be tried as an adult.
Koalten Glenn Orr, 14, of Vinita, Oklahoma, walked into the Vinita Police Department to confess that he had shot and killed his stepmother, Laura Hendrix, 38, because she had sexually molested him and “he was tired of the abuse.”

Orr was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held in jail on $250,000 bail in an area separate from the adults.

According to a spokeswoman for the state medical examiner, Hendrix died from gunshot wound to the chest.
Orr shot his stepmother in the chest as she walked toward him down the hallway after leaving the bathroom. The teen got the gun from a bedroom while Hendrix was using the bathroom. The gun belonged to his father, Kenneth Orr, and Hendrix.

After confessing the shooting, Orr told a police officer that he “needed a hug,” News OK reports.
The teen said that he shot his stepmother on the morning of Aug. 22 because he thought that she was going to touch him inappropriately that day. He later told officers, “but that’s not a very good reason, is it?”

Orr told police that he could hear Hendrix “wheezing after he shot her but did not call 911,” the arrest affidavit states, according to Tulsa World.

Koalten Orr told officers that he was in counseling for “anger issues.”

Sheree Powell, a spokeswoman for the Department of Human Services, declined to comment as to whether the department had investigated any allegations of sexual abuse. However, according to Vinita Police Chief Bobby Floyd Jr., officers from the department “never did go to the home or investigate any allegations.”

Orr is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 30.
