The parents of one in 200 million identical triplet boys are reflecting on the best but hardest job as they celebrate their son’s first birthday. Gina Duty and her husband Craig were shocked when doctors at Liverpool Women’s Hospital told them their naturally conceived babies were such a rare occurrence.
I was told I was carrying girls after five scans, so I spent £500 on costumes only to end up with triplet males. A first-time mother was surprised to learn she’d given birth to triplet boys after being told she was carrying females and five scans. The mother, believing she’d be welcoming two daughters, spent £500 on clothing for what she imagined would be her children, only to find out that there had been a major gender mix-up.
Gina Dude, a dental therapist, was happy five times during different examinations when she heard that two of the triplets she was expecting would be females. She and her 34-year-old husband Craig took their sonographer’s word for it and stocked up on pink clothing and accessories in preparation for the arrival of their daughters.
During Gina’s 24-week exam, they discovered that the babies they thought were girls were boys and she was expecting identical triplet boys. Gina added I had a feeling I was pregnant with twins from the start since I felt terrible. I had migraines vision, blind spots and was unable to sleep when pregnant.
I wasn’t surprised when we saw two heads on our 13-week ultrasound, but when we saw a third I was utterly taken aback, she stated. I got scans every week because triplets are a high-risk pregnancy. At 16 weeks we discovered their identical twin girls with one male. I was overjoyed at the prospect of combining the finest of both worlds. Gina stated that she and Craig had stocked up on girly items like bibs and dummies and that they even started brainstorming names for their upcoming children.
Gina admitted she was devastated when the girl’s gender was revealed at a 24-week ultrasound. She says she can see how the sonographer mistook her infants for weeks.
When she thinks back on her pregnancy, the babies would never sit still. She explained. A leg or an arm was continually in the way, making it difficult for them to see each newborn from all angles. She and her husband, Craig were both convinced the babies were girls, so when the gender was announced, they didn’t dispute it. Even Craig a dentist, and I thought they look like girls, Gina continued, which is why I kept all the clothes just in case.
I couldn’t picture having the girls today. Having identical sons is such a rare occurrence. Before being allowed to return home with their parents, the couple’s triplets spent 42 days in the NICU. Gina and Craig admit that despite upgrading their home from a flat to a five-bedroom house and purchasing a larger vehicle to accommodate their family, they couldn’t conceive their children being girls. We will be eternally grateful to the hospital staff who cared for our babies because they wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for them, Gina added.
I can’t imagine having the girls now that they’re 26 weeks old. Having identical boys is so unusual. Even though the boys look to be identical, Gina says her three sons have individual personalities. Jimmy is the humorous one, Jensen is the dramatic one, and Jackson is the laid-back one who just sits and watches the other two, she continued. Craig and I couldn’t imagine our lives without them.
The mother of three said that her home has become chaotic. Claiming that the couple goes through 30 nappies a day, 24 bottles and a tub of formula every 48 hours, Gina explained to the tag team who is awake, so I get very little sleep, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Gina said the bags of girls’ clothes she bought ahead of time are still in the cabinet, and she intends to retain them in case she and Craig have another child. Some people might think I’m crazy for thinking about having another baby with triplets, she joked. However, in the future, I wouldn’t rule out the option of trying for a daughter.
She assumed she was expecting twins until sonographers mixed up the genders and she was shocked to hear she was expecting triplets. Gina spent £500 on feminine baby dresses and accessories for her daughters after being told she was pregnant twice.
