The former royal residence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has officially lost its keys. “We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to evacuate their house at Frogmore Cottage,” a spokeswoman for the pair told POPSUGAR on March 1. A request for comment from POPSUGAR was not immediately answered by representatives of Buckingham Palace.
The BBC cited The Sun as saying that days following the release of Harry’s explosive biography, “Spare,” the couple received an eviction notice from Buckingham Palace informing them that they had forfeited their UK residence, Frogmore Cottage.
The source added that Prince Andrew has subsequently been extended an offer for the cottage. The Sun also claimed that King Charles III was the driving force behind the choice to kick Harry and Markle out of their previous home.
Frogmore Cottage was initially given to Harry and Markle by the late Queen Elizabeth II following their nuptials in 2018. The two lived there for six months before deciding to resign from their roles as senior royals after spending 2.4 million pounds of tax payer money on improvements. According to the BBC, Harry later paid back the 2.4 million pounds in full.
The couple now live in Montecito, California, but they returned to Frogmore Cottage in 2022 and celebrated their daughter Lilibet’s first birthday there. Harry published his memoir in January, which contained multiple allegations about the royal family, including claims that Prince William physically attacked him during an argument about Markle.
Andrew, who is said to have been offered Frogmore Cottage, stepped down as a working royal in 2019 after being accused of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre, which he has denied. He currently lives in the nearby 31-room Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire.
