Neighbour ‘complains about Union Jack flying in man’s garden’ – so he buys a bigger flag

A British man decided to put up a massive Union Jack in his garden after someone complained to the council about him flying a smaller one. Colin is a TikToker who shares “patriotic” content under the handle @bigc_1969, with more than 20,000 followers on the platform.

In a viral video that’s clocked up a whopping 1.5million views, the content creator is seen holding a flag and explaining why it it was no longer flying at his home. Colin says he took the flag down because “someone didn’t like it, they complained to the council”.

Asked why by a woman off camera called Dawn, he replies, “Well, because that’s what people do nowadays, they complain about everything don’t they?”

He adds that in response he’s got an “even bigger one” and is seen hoisting it up the flagpole.

Dawn is heard warning it’s “gonna be too big Col. Oh my god”.

Colin then says, “if they complain again, do you know what I’m going to do? I’ll get an even bigger one!’.

Some TikTok users supported the move, with one commenting: “Hoist that beautiful flag high. I salute the flag and you sir.”

Another wrote: “Go bigger Colin!!!!”

A third added: “Our beautiful Union Jack can NEVER be big enough. Fly her with PRIDE sir.”

However, others were quick to point out that the self-proclaimed patriot’s flag is being displayed the wrong way round, with one writing, “great but it’s upside down, wide white stipe should be on top against flag pole”.

Another quipped that the way its displayed may signify a distress signal, a popular but disputed belief.

“Colin it’s upside down, the white broad bit should be at the top,” they wrote, adding: “It’s a distress call which is probably about right. Who is going to save us?”

The Union flag is asymmetrical, and when hung correctly, the “fat white bar in the top corner of the flag, closest to the flagpole, should be along the top edge of the flag, not the flagpole edge”, Forces News explains.
