Teacher charged with assaulting person who repeatedly used ‘R-word’

A teacher in Tennessee faces 2 assault charges after police say he became angry that someone used the ‘R-word at a recent neighborhood party.

Hamilton County deputies arrested 44-year-old Daniel Quincy Hearn on Sunday.

An affidavit says Hearn was at a neighborhood party when the incident happened.

The affidavit says someone used the word ‘retarded,’ and Hearn became upset. When someone used the word again, Hearn “became very upset and aggressive,” according to the report.

The affidavit says Hearn has a daughter living with Down syndrome. Many people now consider the ‘R’-word to be an insult and a slur in any context.

The report says Hearn was asked to leave, but he then broke a beer bottle on a table and pushed a woman down, causing the wine glass she was holding to break, cutting her hand.

The husband of the woman got between her and Hearn, and the affidavit says Hearn “began to assault him.”

Hearn then left the residence and went home, according to the report.

Deputies questioned Hearn at his home. The affidavit says Hearn told them “someone did keep using the word and it made him upset.” He told the deputies he remembered breaking the beer bottle, but he “did not remember anything else.”

Deputies then arrested Hearn and charged him with 2 counts of assault.

Bradley Central High School’s website identifies Hearn as a history teacher, assistant football coach and assistant track coach.
